This set of ten "20 Point Challenge" worksheets is a great way to get students to really focus on capitalization and punctuation skills (periods, question marks, and exclamation marks). It is a mastery learning activity that I use in my 4th grade classroom. The students earn one point for each totally correct sentence. I keep track of their totals on the grid worksheet that is included with this download. At the beginning of the challenge, I tell students that once they reach 20 points, they have achieved their goal and are finished. They receive free time each class time after that (while other students continue to work toward their 20 points). What's amazing is how many students who previously rushed through their work, now slow down to earn more points. I teach one skill at the beginning of each lesson and sometimes we do one of the sentences together (I let them pick which one). I give each student a small reward once they reach 20 points. This method can be used in other subject areas too. It's encouraging to see students focused on a specific goal. Each worksheet has been designed with kid-friendly graphics and contain some fun facts along the way. Kids love reading the messages by the "decimal dude" throughout each lesson.
