PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Interactive Notebooks serve many purposes in the classroom. The notebooks become an “anchor” for the standards taught, as well, as a reference that your students can use throughout the year. I have found that my students are SO proud of the finished product. They love seeing all of the language skills they have learned in one place.

This notebook covers ALL of the 2nd grade Language Standards:

In this product you will find:
A cover for the notebook
An “I can statement” for each standard to glue at the top of the notebook page
Printables to create each page
Dividers for each Language strands
Photos of each page of the notebook put together so you have an idea of how the materials can be used

Each student will need:
A composition notebook
Crayons, markers, and/or colored pencils
Glue
Copies of the materials for each standard

You will find that I have included several of the same images on each page to reduce copying.

I hope that you find this instruction tool to be beneficial for your students. I feel confident that your students will love creating these as a way to reinforce the reading standards.

Most activities look great. I just think that my students will need a review of first grade skills as the work on the second grade ones. A review section, e.g. on plural nouns before irregular plurals would be helpful.

Where do I even begin with this! This is by far my favorite purchase so far. I bought it and immediately bought composition notebooks for my students. They love this, crave it and ask for it every single day. I love that the standards are written on every single skill. I love the my students can explain every last subject in the book because the tactile nature of the project. My principal was thoroughly impressed that on cue all of my students could explain in detail what a possessive pronoun was.

The other teachers in my grade are amazed at not only how well my students know their stuff, but how stinking cute the book ends up!

We ended up dividing the composition book in half. I bought the reading notebook that you also offer. We use the front half for language and the second half for reading.

Thank you soooo much. I just wish that there were interactive notebooks for all the subjects!
On  February 28, 2014Nicole Shelby answered:
WOW!!! First of all, I want to thank you for taking the time to leave such thorough feedback. I appreciate the time you took to do that. Also, I just can't even begin to tell you what your comments mean to me. I am beyond thrilled to hear that your students love the notebooks and that you have found them to be an effective tool in the classroom. :)

Excellent resource! I've been using this for many months and the kids are so excited when we do the activities. I bought the composition books (at Target when they were on sale last August) and they are perfect for this. I sent a note home for parents to send markers.
I have taught 30+ years and this by far has been the most exciting activity for the kids. After I teach each standard, we create the page for that skill in our books. The kids beg to do these every day. When we review skills, kids will refer back to the pages we finished. It's fantastic!
I also bought the Reading Notebook and use the flip side of our Composition book as well. GREAT PRODUCT. Wish you have one for math (hint, hint).
On  April 10, 2014Nicole Shelby answered:
WOW!!!! When I read this, I nearly did a backflip! Thank you so much for your sweet and thoughtful feedback. I am SO excited to hear that this has been effective in your classroom. Thank you SO much for sharing!

Just chiming in to say that I would love a first grade version of both the Reading and the Language notebooks. I have been teaching Reading and Language Arts to grades 1-5 for the past 7 years, and having this available in all my grade levels would make me HAVE to have them all :)

On  October 29, 2013Nicole Shelby answered:
Thank you so much!! I have started one for 1st grade, but I don't have it finished. I keep thinking I will finish it, but I can't seem to find the time. Maybe sometime in the near future, I will be able to sit down and finish it. :)

On  October 9, 2013Rebekah Rossbach (TpT Seller) asked:
Hello! Are these standards the new Common Core Standards? Along with the Reading Notebook (same question)?
Thanks!
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  October 9, 2013Nicole Shelby answered:
Yes, the notebooks are aligned with the Common Core State Standards.
On  September 23, 2013Josie (TpT Seller) asked:
Hello,

Just wondering does the language note book contain the same things as the reading notebook? Also, would you recommend this 2nd grade language notebook for a 1/2 combo?
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  September 23, 2013Nicole Shelby answered:
The language notebook covers all the language standards and the reading covers all of the reading (literature, informational, foundational) standards so the books are very different.

I think this book would work in your classroom if you are teaching the 2nd grade standards. Since this notebook is aligned with those standards, some "tweaking" might have to be done if you are working on 1st grade standards. I hope this helps!

Thanks,
Nicole

On  September 19, 2013,  Buyer asked:
About how many pages do they end up being in a composition book? I am concerned about fitting both in one composition book that is 70 or 100 pages. And does a spiral notebook work better because it allows for a little more expansion once you glue the pages in?
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  September 19, 2013Nicole Shelby answered:
You shouldn't have any problems getting both notebooks in the 70 page or 100 page notebook. I chose the 100 page one because it allows me the flexibility to additional things if needed. My students use the Composition notebooks. I am not a fan of spiral notebooks, but that would just be a personal choice for you.

I hope this helps! ;)

I have 2 questions.
1 - I would like to know what type of colored pens you are using. ;)
2 - I am using your notebooks for my son. I am homeschooling. so I don't need the same images repeated on the same page. It is taking so much ink. Would you have a copy with only one or different images on the page?

Hello,

I used markers and flair pens for writing in the notebooks. I don't have the file in any other format on my computer than what I have available on TpT. I wish I did, I would gladly send it to you.

I just purchased your notebooks and they are awesome!! My questions is: can I fit both reading and language in to 1 single subject spiral notebook or should I use 2 separate notebooks? That's what I had the parents buy this year :( before I saw these. I will use colorful duck tape to keep papers/spiral from fraying....I did read that on a blog somewhere

Hello, my name is Ashley Parks. I teach 2nd grade at Bergman Elementary, a small town in Arkansas. Recently, my colleague and team had purchased your Interactive Language Arts Notebook package using 1 username and we bought additional licenses. For the past 5 years, I have been the only 2nd grade teacher at my school, so when I have purchased items they have always showed up on my dashboard on TPT and I can access them any time. Buying multiple licenses does not allow you to do that. Is there any way that I can access this product via any computer or do I need to keep track of my thumb drive?

Thank you,
Ashley

On  September 11, 2013Nicole Shelby answered:
Ashley,

This would be a question for TpT as I am not sure. When I have bought multiple licenses to share with my team, it only shows up on my dashboard. But, you will need to contact TpT for a more specific answer.

Hi Nicole,
I am confused, sorry. When setting up the notebook, are there labels for each ELA common core? For example, you have a label page for L.2.1b, but not L.2.1a. I really need some advice on setting up the notebook. I am trying to make a sample book for myself before I try to teach this to the children. According to my count: RL has 10 standards, RI has 10, RF has 11, W has 8, Conventions has 14 and RSL has 9. Are there tabs for each of these? Oh boy, I hope you understand. Thanks so very much for any advice!
Wishing you a great school year

Hi Cheryl,

I am going to try my very best to answer your questions, but I must admit, I am not sure I completely understand exactly what you are asking.

First, I am assuming you have both of my notebooks??? If you only have the 2nd grade Language, you will JUST have the Language standards. If you have both notebooks, you will have the Reading Standards (all literature, informational, and foundational standards) and Language. I don't have notebooks available for the Writing or Speaking and Listening. The Literature essentially has 9 standards because RL.2.8 is not applicable to literature.

I am not sure how to answer your question about the page L.2.1a and L.2.1b. You can find the materials for L.2.1a on page 38 and the materials for L.2.1b on pages 39-40.

As far as setting up the notebook, I have a blog post for you to see how we started setting them up in my classroom. Here is the link:
http://teachingwithblondeambition.blogspot.com/2013/08/so-we-have-began-our-reading.html

I hope I have answered your questions. I am not sure if I did or not because like I said before, I am not sure I completely understand what you are asking. If you have more questions, please let me know. I'll be happy to try to help.

Thanks so much!

I absolutely love you interactive notebooks and can not wait to use them this year. I purchase both language and reading. You stated that you put both in the same book? My question is how do you recommend setting them up? I read your blog post, but I still am need of some guidance please. Would you recommend Reading first, then Language, or as you do them? Do you need more than 2 pages for each, and also how would you recommend putting the table of contents if you are merging them both? My state has not adopted CC yet, but your notebooks, hit on almost every standard we teach. Thanks again.

On  September 2, 2013Nicole Shelby answered:
I do put both notebooks in one although I almost treat them as two notebooks. The first section contains the reading standards and the second section has all of the language. I put the standards in order. I had the students place the table of contents for the language in the language section. I left two pages for each standard for reading, but not the language. I have those pages one right after another.

I hope this helps!

I just am wondering if I understand your set up suggestions---I should glue the dividers in the composition notebooks in advance , allowing a two page spread for each of the standards. Is that the recommended way to go about prepping the books rather than having the kids glue in the divider pages as we go along?

On  August 13, 2013Nicole Shelby answered:
Yes, that's how I am putting them together this year. I think it's going to be a lot easier for the kids and my sanity. :) But this is the way that I am doing it, that doesn't mean you have to do it that way. That was just my suggestion. Last year, my students' notebooks were a disaster. LOL!!

I was wondering. When I think Composition notebook I think of the smaller, usually black, notebooks, which your title page and dividers seem to fit. However, the templates all came out as 8.5 by 11. Which size notebook did you design these for? The pages are awesome, BTW.

On  August 1, 2013Nicole Shelby answered:
I designed them for the black and white Composition notebooks. I had no trouble with the templates fitting in the notebooks. If you find that yours printed out larger and won't fit, choose the option of "shrink to printable area". I hope this helps!

On  July 28, 2013Nicole Shelby answered:
No, there is no need for a password unless you are trying to edit the product. I am not sure exactly what you are doing, but that has to be the issue (even if you are doing it unintentionally). Try these instructions for saving it to your computer.

All you need to do is open the file and then once it is open (the Adobe file), then go to "file" and "save as." If you want to save it to your desktop, then simply click on "save to desktop." Or, click on another location, such as your flash drive.

Hope that helps!

I'm so excited to buy this! I just bought your Reading Notebook a few days ago-- my question is, if you put both notebooks together into one composition book, how many pages are the composition books you used? I know I can buy one that is 80 pages or another that is 100. Thank You!

Hi there,

Yes, I did put both the reading and the language in one notebook. I bought the 100 page composition notebook and for the 2nd grade level, I roughly had about 50 pages left (I quickly counted, so there could have been a few more). So, either notebook count would work.

Hope this helps!

Love these. In the preview, I saw handwritten items. Is this included or is this something the students are expected to do? Thanks for the info.
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  July 18, 2013Nicole Shelby answered:
I am not sure I completely understand your question, so I am going to address it from several different angles in hopes that you get the answer you are looking for. This item has all of the printed templates to create the notebooks. There are photos of every page completed so that the teacher will know how to guide the students in creating the page and what information to include on the page. The "handwritten" part is not included for the students, as this is what makes the notebook "interactive". The students create and interact with the information on each page of the notebook.

Did this answer you question at all? If not, send me another message and I can clarify anything that is still confusing.

Thanks,
