Students explore a simple paper clip and redesign it!
Students are shown 33 simple inventions which have impacted our daily lives.
The complete slideshow is provided here for download.
Accompanying lesson notes provide handout, marking template, answer solutions and a complete step by step lesson sequence.
The slideshow is shown again, but this time student names are drawn out of a hat and the invention is assigned to the chosen student.
Students have an activity of researching their invention and presenting to the class.

The inspiration for a new idea can come in many ways. The idea for Velcro came from observing nature. The idea for the paper clip came from random experimenting with wire folding. The idea for the successful light bulb was a process of improving existing products by finding the right material for the filament (carbon).
By having students explore the histories and background of famous everyday objects they find inspiration for their own designs and inventions.
Your students will be amazed at what they discover.
