# 3D Shapes with their Nets and Properties

### PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Everything you need to teach about 3D shapes is found in this illustrated tutorial booklet. From definitions and real world examples to a nets folding activity. Shapes featured are cubes, cuboids, spheres, cylinders, cones, triangular pyramids, rectangular pyramids and triangular prisms.

The nets provided have been created with and without flaps for your students. Use the nets with the flaps to make durable models (print on card Bristol board paper). The nets without flaps should be used for investigating the attributes of each shape Allow students to number each face, cut each net into individual 2D shapes to see how these 2D shapes attach in such a way that they form a 3D Shape. The final page contains a table for students to record the number of faces, edges and vertices on each 3D shape from the folding activity.

I liked this unit. The nets were wonderful. I liked that it included the smaller nets for students to cut out and explore as they fill out the attributes sheet. And the introduction pages was great for reviewing the shapes with the students and a projector.

Is this part of the 3rd grade common core?
I researched the criteria for the third grade common core and this is what I found:

1. Reason with shapes and their attributes.
2. Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.
3. Partition shapes into parts with equal areas. Express the area of each part as a unit fraction of the whole. For example, partition a shape into 4 parts with equal area, and describe the area of each part as 1/4 of the area of the shape.

It seems that it only deals with 2D shapes. I have a unit for #2 above, it is found here:
