This is a great resource. I am excited about using it. I had some questions, but the seller promptly responded & clarified. I am still uncertain if I should have started with a lower grade level.
On  August 17, 2013Kali Delamagente the Tech Teacher answered:
I think your students were the gifted 2nd graders. In 2nd grade, the curriculum introduces productivity software--word processing, spreadsheets, slideshows, Publisher. It also does projects with Google Earth, online tools, and has age-appropriate discussions on Digital Citizenship. Finally, it works on keyboarding--but ungraded, barely assessed. Most to establish habits.

All of these topics are covered in 3rd grade, pacd for students who are familiar with them. You may have to adjust the amount of material you present, backfill some ideas, work a bit more slowly with 2nd graders using the 3rd grade lessons. You'll be able to feel that out.

A big difference is the focus on keyboarding. 2nd graders don't typically have the fine motor skills to work at the 3rd grade level on their keyboarding so I highly recommend you ratchet back those exercises to what works for your group.

I guess I'm still not answering your question completely. You might have the second grade text available for those times when it fits your group better than the 3rd grade book. You may not need that--you can probably judge that within a few weeks.

Feel free to throw questions my way via askatechteacher@gmail.com. I can probably help you sort whether a skill is within range of 2nd graders as it comes up in the 3rd grade book (i.e., tables might be a bit challenging). Have a great school year!

Product Questions & Answers

On  August 14, 2013L Ramsey (TpT Seller) asked:
Hi Kali, I just bought this product for my class of gifted 2nd graders. I have not used any of your products before. It looks like 3rd grade curriculum assumes one is familiar with your previous lessons (i.e. 2nd grade). Do you think I should start with 2nd grade curriculum instead? Issues I have so far: I don't see evidence board explained or examples/printables. Lesson 1 says to review Problem Solving Board, "see inset". The inset is too small to read & where do I get these materials to create the board? Is there an overall vocab resource/glossary to give students? Would these questions be answered if I started with Grade 2? Thank you!
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  August 14, 2013Kali Delamagente the Tech Teacher answered:
Hi Lorie--

Let me answer those questions first:
1) The evidence board tracks how students use tech skills outside of the class. It's informal. I ask students to volunteer information. They raise their hands and share an experience with the class (i.e., I used Google Maps to find my friend's house). If it is a valid example, they fill out one of the badges (there's a sample in the book) and I stick it on an 'Evidence Board' bulleting board on the wall. That's it. Very informal. If your 3rd garders aren't chatty, model an example for them (i.e., you used Yelp to find a good restaurant when visiting your cousin). The three Boards (this Evidence Board, the Problem Solving Board and the Speak Like a Geek Vocabulary Board) are great for supporting Common Core Speaking and Listening standards, as well as the revolving around research using tech.

2) The inset is small, but there's a full size sample at the end of the lesson. Some people don't like to page back and forth so I put a mini-pic there where they could at least use it for reference. The 'Board' concept is a presentation by students. I've used that name forever, but now that you mention it, it is confusing. It's not really a board, rather the student picks a tech problem from a list (I post it on the wall), researches it independently through family/friends, then presents the solution to classmates at the start of a class (like a Responsive Classroom event).

3) The Vocabulary Board is a similar idea (and again, I see the confusion calling it a Board). Students select a word, research the definition, then present it to the class. I used to include a list, but I found it better to collect words used in class. For example, when you discuss the USB port--there are two words that should go on the list. 'Network' is a good one. You probably know words your students have trouble with so those can be the ones you use this first year.

I know I've only touched a few of the questions you'll have on an ongoing basis. I invite you to join my teaching wiki (k-3tech.wikispaces.com/Third+Grade). It's free for those who own the book. It's a great place to get focused help on exactly the lesson you're working on.

Thanks, Lorie!
On  August 6, 2013L Ramsey (TpT Seller) asked:
In your preview you reference BrainPop videos. Do I have to subscribe to BrainPop or can I get it via BrainPop for educators? Does your material reference any other paid websites? Thank you.
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  August 6, 2013Kali Delamagente the Tech Teacher answered:
Some of the BrainPop videos are subscription, but some are free or accessed via BrainPop for educators. I have a big list of alternative videos you can use instead if you don't have BrainPop, so not to worry about that. Most of what I use is free, but where it isn't, I offer a free alternative. If you run into one, email me at askatechteacher@gmail.com and I'll let you know the options.
