QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS:

What is the name of the book that you use? Is it too hard for grade 1 and 2? Do yo have answers and rubrics included in this package?
I hope that I can address your question adequately. 43 Old Cemetery Road is a 3rd-5th grade level chapter book and I would not recommend it for student in the primary grades. The text is too difficult. The packet includes graphic organizers and activities to go along with the book. There are answers for pages that require specific answers, but the packet is designed to be open and there could be multiple answers. There is no rubrics included. I hope this helps.
Thanks,
Nicole

Hi Nicole! I purchased this unit and am very excited to use it. I would love to know the timeline for which you implemented this in your classroom. Thank you so much!
I am so glad that you are excited about the unit. It is SUCH a fun book to teach! Many of my kids have gone on to purchase and read the other books in the series. A new book comes out April 2, 2013 and my kids can hardly wait.
As far as a timeline of the book, I think that would depend on the level of your students. I teach two different reading classes-they are skill grouped. The higher group moved at a much faster pace than the other group. The faster group finished the books and activities in 2 1/2 weeks. The other group took 3 weeks and I didn't teach ALL of the skills in the book packet for that group. I just did some picking and choosing for what worked best for each group. I did the writing piece about the haunted house during my writing class, which is a separate time period than my reading. It took about 1 1/2 weeks to prewrite, complete a rough draft, edit and revise, and publish.
I hope this helps with planning your instruction. Have fun! How doesn't love a good ghost story? Especially one as cute as 43 Old Cemetery Road.
I am starting my tenth year of teaching. During that time I have taught 4th and 5th grades. I am currently teaching 4th grade. I absolutely love teaching! I have the best job in the world!
