PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Interactive Notebooks serve many purposes in the classroom. The notebooks become an “anchor” for the standards taught, as well, as a reference that your students can use throughout the year. I have found that my students are SO proud of the finished product. They love seeing all of the reading skills they have learned in one place.

This notebook covers all of the 4th grade Reading Standards (including Literature, Informational, and Foundational Skills).

In this product you will find:
A cover for the notebook
An “I can statement” for each standard to glue at the top of the notebook page
Printables to create each page
Dividers for each Reading strands
Photos of each page of the notebook put together so you have an idea of how the materials can be used

Each student will need:
A composition notebook
Crayons, markers, and/or colored pencils
Glue
Copies of the materials for each standard

You will find that I have included several of the same images on each page to reduce copying. Also, I have included both boy and girl images when the clipart option was available. You can either choose to provide both options for your students or just copy one or the other.

I hope that you find this instruction tool to be beneficial for your students. I feel confident that your students will love creating these as a way to reinforce the reading standards.

I have purchased the 3rd and 4th grade language and reading interactive notebooks. These materials are fantastic. I teach 4th grade resource room students. I mix the materials from the 3rd and 4th grade books and use the pages as a guide and springboard for the CCSS. Probably the best purchase I've made from TPT, and I've made many excellent purchases.

Hi Michelle.

I do not have my notebooks available without the Common Core Standards listed. If you are thinking of purchasing, I wouldn't recommend them for teachers that do not teach the CCSS. Thanks for your question.

Love all of your products - especially this. I bought 3rd and 4th grade as I have a combo. (I did see your advice to only choose one.) But I'm still trying to figure out how to squeeze it all in - both preparing the materials, keeping them organized, and getting the pages done in class. Do you have any advice in terms of keeping on schedule and getting the books done in a timely manner?
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  November 4, 2013Nicole Shelby answered:
Thank you so much for your kind words! :) To answer your questions, I don't have any tips for preparing the materials and keeping them organized because I just copy them as I need them. I hate clutter, so I don't copy months or even days in advance. However, maybe a file folder box with folders for each standard might work for you.

Every classroom is different, so it's tough to give teachers a one size fits all way to implement the notebooks. In my classroom, we generally complete a notebook page a week. I usually have one day that is committed to the notebook. I am able to do other activities besides the notebook in that class time, but the notebook is definitely the focus for that day. If I have a lot to get in that day, I often copy the materials on colored paper, so that it adds to the notebook without the students have to color. Also, I have a caddy for each group of students that contains glue sticks, scissors, and crayons. This definitely saves time distributing materials.

I did some prep work prior to starting the notebooks that have helped with implementation. I did a blog post about it here.

http://www.teachingwithblondeambition.blogspot.com/2013/08/so-we-have-began-our-reading.html

I hope maybe this gives you the information you are looking for. Good luck notebooking! I hope that your students find it as valuable as my students do.

Thanks,
Nicole

I bought the language and reading interactive journal and am combining them. Is there any way you could make the cover sheet and Reading and Language Journal in the font that is on the separate Reading and Language Journal packs? I really like the fonts, but cutting and pasting doesn't look good. Love the products.

On  September 30, 2013Nicole Shelby answered:
I had another request for this some time ago. I have tried very hard to make it work, but the letters just don't fit. I have tried to make them smaller, but they lose their quality. Also, the letters only come in color, so that is another issue as well. I will try to play around with them again. If I am able to get them to fit and not lose their quality, I will add the cover to my store. I am sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Thanks,

Hi! I just purchased your 4th & 5th Grade Interactive Reading Notebooks and had a question. They look WONDERFUL, but...I live in one of those crazy states that has decided NOT to be aligned with the Common Core. SO, having them on every page is not good. Is there any way you can remove them or that I can remove them? I REALLY want to purchase your 2nd & 3rd grade sets for my other students, but now I'm not sure what to do. If you want, you can email me directly on my phone at madcarstan@aol.com Thanks & I'm hoping for good news...these would be a great resource for the students I work with.

I've always had a reader's notebook and writer's notebook and I'm not sure where to put the interactive notebooks. If I combine the reading and language, there won't be room for any reading response type things. I thought about having the interactive reading pages in my readers notebook and the language pages in my writers notebook. What do you think? Also, do you have students glue things on front and backs of pages? Do you find the composition book gets too fat with all the gluing? Sorry for so many neurotic questions! My students do complete reading response activities. These often include some kind of graphic organizers or letters to me about their reading. My students do not put these in their Composition notebooks. They have a binder in which they put these in, so my situation is a little bit different than your. My students put both their reading and their language in one Composition notebook and yes we use the fronts and backs of the notebook pages. The notebooks do not get too fat from the gluing. We have no issues with that. I am not sure if the type of glue matters, but we use glue sticks. Maybe that makes a difference.

Thanks for a great product! I saw that someone had asked a question similar to what I was going to ask: about how you use it in the classroom (Number of pages per week, etc.). I appreciate your thorough answer to that person and am now wondering how to keep kids organized. How do you pass the pieces out? How long do you typically allow them to take when gluing and writing (I saw that you usually have them color later during a free time or something)? Maybe you could write some blog posts about it (I couldn't find the posts if you already did this, so if you did, can you give me a link instead)? Thanks!

I do plan to blog about the journey throughout the year. I did a recent blog post about how we organized our notebooks the other day. You can check it out here.
http://www.teachingwithblondeambition.blogspot.com/2013/08/so-we-have-began-our-reading.html

As far as passing out the pieces, I copy the number of sheets I need and use the cutter to cut them into strips when I can. I can't really give you a time frame on the gluing and cutting. I have two different classes that I do notebooks with and they work at different speeds and it depends on the interactive page. To alleviate coloring, I do have the kids color during free time or I copy the pages on colored paper.

Maybe my blog post will answer some of your questions. And I will be adding more throughout the school year. :)

Dear Nicole,

I bought the 4th grade edition for interactive reading notebook; and I love the templates, but I was really looking forward to find a guide and not just templates. How do you introduce the journal to your students? How many entries do you usually do each week? How do you plan the lessons to match each one of the standards?

Thank you for your help,

Teachers Pay Teachers
On  August 4, 2013Nicole Shelby answered:
Hi Kelly,

I will try to answer your questions to the best of my ability, but every classroom is SO different, the notebooks and how a teacher utilizes them will not look the same. Some teachers use reader's workshop, some use Daily 5, and some have a basal or other programs they are tied to. That's why this notebook is very open to be used with whatever you use in your classroom.

In my classroom, the journals are part of my introductory lesson of a skill. I introduce my learning target, some kind of quick mini-lesson, and the as a class we create our page for our interactive journal (our mini-anchor chart). Then the students have the resource to use all week or how ever long it takes me to teach the skill. But in all honesty, my kids use each individual page all year because with the CCSS, you can really teach a standard and check it off. You have to teach them all year in a spiral format.

The number of entries depend on how long it takes me to teach a skill and how fast my students move. Again, this would be on a classroom by classroom bases. Sometimes I get one entry done, sometimes, two. Other weeks, I am still on a previous skill and I don't do any new entries.

Answering the question about planning lessons...WOW! I could write you a novel. The notebooks are not going to change the way you plan lessons. You are still going to have to plan your lessons based on the CCSS. The notebooks are completely aligned with those standards, so it doesn't matter what materials you use, the notebook will work. Generally, I start the week with a mini-lesson, complete the notebook page, and then throughout the week practice the skill with mini-lessons, small group, and independent practice.

I hope this helps you better understand how the notebooks are used. I apologize if you didn't get everything you thought you were going to get. I feel that the description accurately describes the product. I listed everything that was in the notebook and the skills that were covered. If you have other suggestions for the description to make it more understandable, please let me know.

If you have any other questions, please email me at nicoleshelby@hotmail.com. It's difficult to answer these lengthy questions in this small little response box. But please know, I would be happy to answer your questions.

Thanks so much,

On  July 28, 2013Nicole Shelby answered:
The interactive notebooks work nicely with Reader's Workshop. In fact, I use a similar format in my own classroom. Generally, I use the interactive page for the notebook toward the introductory part of the lesson/unit, that why the students can use it as a resource during independent or small group practice. How long you spend on developing the page is up to you. Most of the time, I don't have the students color the pages until later...free time, etc. I can't really give you a time frame because it would be different based on teaching styles and your students.

I hope this helps!

There are some similarities, but every book is unique to meet the standards and each has the I can statements for the specific grade level. I guess to answer your question...if you buy a book and try to adapt it for another grade level, know that you are going to have to make some modifications. The 4th grade book won't perfectly align with the 5th grade standards. As far as a discount or something like that, I don't have the ability to do that for one particular person or individual sale like that. That would be a nice feature for TpT to offer. ;)

Teachers Pay Teachers
On  July 17, 2013Nicole Shelby answered:
Hi Rebecca,

I didn't really think about listing the skills because the notebook covers ALL of the reading standards- literature, informational, and foundational. The skills that are covered in those standards are addressed in the notebook, if that makes sense. There is at least one page for EVERY reading standard. For the standard R.4.10, I used comprehension strategies that teachers use such as making connections, synthesizing, determining importance, and visualizing. I didn't include making inferences for that standard, because I had already addressed in the literature and informational sections of the notebook.

I hope this answers your question.

Thank you for your sweet comments! I am so glad that you like the notebook. :) I am sorry, but I will not be making a math notebook. In my current position, I don't teach math. I am more of a Language Arts person.

Thanks for checking!

I absolutely love your interactive reading notebook! This is exactly what I want to implement next year. Unfortunately, I teach third grade. I wish you had one for third grade!

Thank you for your kind words! You are so sweet! :) I rarely run sales that are not sponsored by the TpT site. At this point, I have not been notified of a back to school sale, but if they do have one, I will participate.

Thanks so much!
