PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Interactive Notebooks serve many purposes in the classroom. The notebooks become an “anchor” for the standards taught, as well, as a reference that your students can use throughout the year. I have found that my students are SO proud of the finished product. They love seeing all of the reading skills they have learned in one place.

This notebook covers all of the 5th grade Reading Standards (including Literature, Informational, and Foundational Skills).

In this product you will find:
A cover for the notebook
An “I can statement” for each standard to glue at the top of the notebook page
Printables to create each page
Dividers for each Reading strands
Photos of each page of the notebook put together so you have an idea of how the materials can be used

Each student will need:
A composition notebook
Crayons, markers, and/or colored pencils
Glue
Copies of the materials for each standard

You will find that I have included several of the same images on each page to reduce copying. Also, I have included both boy and girl images when the clipart option was available. You can either choose to provide both options for your students or just copy one or the other.

I hope that you find this instruction tool to be beneficial for your students. I feel confident that your students will love creating these as a way to reinforce the reading standards.

Absolutely wonderful. The notes and pictures of your completed notebook are so helpful for me and my students. I can put the pictures up on the interactive whiteboard so there is no confusion of how the page should look. Your written notes are also extremely helpful. As a first year teacher, this product is priceless.

Hi, I downloaded the file, but it will not let me save it without an owner password, any ideas? Thanks
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  March 2, 2014Nicole Shelby answered:
Are you on a Mac? It's probably because you are trying to save the file in preview and not actually opening it in Adobe Reader. Make sure that the file is being opened with Adobe Reader. This should correct the problem and you should have no issues saving it to your computer, flash drive, etc.

If you need specific instructions for how to do this, here is a link to a blog post that addresses common technical issues that buyers have. This one is one of them.

I hope this helps! Enjoy notebooking with your kiddos!

I'm just looking into interactive notebooks for next year and I'm finding tons of resources, but I don't really know what I'm looking at sometimes. :)
For example, on the Elements of Drama preview, do you include a reading selection with that or do I use my own and then you've provided a good organizer for that standard? Is it consistent all the way through? I noticed in one of the comments that there was a poem included. That's why I'm wondering if each standard also has an accompanying text?

Hello,

Thank you so much for letting me know. I now have it corrected and you can download the corrected version. Also, I sent you an email. I just wanted you to be on the lookout for it.

On  March 6, 2014,  Buyer asked:
Hi, I am currently doing a 4th grade notebook with my students, which is amazing, and will be looping with my students to 5th grade. Is there enough different/new material in the 5th grade book to justify doing a separate one or should I have them use the 4th grade one and just add to it anything not covered in 4th? Thanks so much.
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  March 6, 2014Nicole Shelby answered:
If it were me, I would probably just add the additional elements not covered in the 4th grade standards rather thank buying the additional notebook. The standards are very similar and in this case, I used a lot of the same clipart. That's just my two cents. :)

I hope this helps!

Thanks,
Nicole

Oh, good! I have your language and reading notebooks for 5th grade, but it looks like I'm moving to 6th grade next year. I LOVE your notebooks!!! Do you think it'll possibly happen before next school year starts? The nice thing is that the standards are similar and build off 5th grade standards.

Hello! I am really enjoying using this product this year! I have a question though. While lesson planning for next week, I found on the table of contents that there is a section for Text Features, page 109-111. However, when I went to those pages, it was a different skill. I looked through the entire document and couldn't find anything for text features. Is it missing, or did I overlook it?

Thanks!

On  October 4, 2013Nicole Shelby answered:
Hi,

Thanks for letting me know about the Table of Contents. It should say that "print and digital resources" are on those pages. I will correct the table of contents to reflect that. There is nothing in the file for text features because those are not part of the CCSS for 5th grade so you didn't overlook anything. :)

Thanks again,

Hi Nicole!
I absolutely loved your graphics and concept behind your grade five reading notebook so, I bought it. I took a break from teaching to be a mom for a handful of years and now I am back. Because I spent many years as an Elementary Math Specialist, your product looked like it would be helpful for me. Besides...it is totally my style! School already started here...I was just reviewing the California Common Core Curriculum and noticed that comprehension connections were missing so, I did an Internet Search and came up with several articles that stated those connections were intentionally dropped for the Common Core. Please Google 'Text to Self Common Core' to see for yourself. i really don't know what to make of these articles (remember, I just took a long break from teaching). I love love to know if you have any material that points me to a place where it shows it is part of the common core. My kids already started the notebook and I do love the comprehension connections.
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  September 2, 2013Nicole Shelby answered:
Hi Charlotte,

The standard that I used to address these comprehension standards are:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.5.10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poetry, at the high end of the grades 4–5 text complexity band independently and proficiently.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.5.10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend informational texts, including history/social studies, science, and technical texts, at the high end of the grades 4–5 text complexity band independently and proficiently.

There are various ways that teachers could go about teaching these concepts, but I chose the way the most common strategies teachers use. You can always choose others or not use those particular strategies. It's totally up to you.

Thanks,

The templates are designed to print out and fit in a Composition notebook with no issues. You will not need to resize anything. I do suggest that you use the page scaling "shrink to printable area" but I am not even sure that is necessary because when I was printing out the file to start copying them for my class, I forgot to do that, and they still printed out the size I needed. I guess it would depend on your printer settings.

Hi Kim,

You should be able to save the file to your computer with no trouble. I created it on a Mac and have it saved to a PC. There is no need for a password unless you are trying to edit the product. That's the reason the prompt for a password is coming up. I am not sure exactly what you mean by exporting the file, but that has to be the issue. Try these instructions for saving it to your computer.

All you need to do is open the file and then once it is open (the Adobe file), then go to "file" and "save as." If you want to save it to your desktop, then simply click on "save to desktop." Or, click on another location, such as your flash drive.

Hope that helps!

On  August 1, 2013Nicole Shelby answered:
There are some similarities with the Reading notebooks because the 4th and 5th grade standards are very similar. With that being said, there are some differences because the book is unique to meet the standards and each has the I can statements for the specific grade level. You can certainly modify the 4th grade book to use with the 5th grade standards. The language standards are not as much alike, so those notebooks might be more difficult to modify. I hope this helps.

I do not have a rubric for the notebooks because in my classroom they are a "teaching" tool, not something that I use for a grade. There are some similarities-with clipart and some of the strategies for the reading comprehension, but every book is unique to meet the standards and each has the I can statements for the specific grade level. The skills covered are exactly the Common Core Standards. There are some standards like character traits, story elements, etc. that overlap. Then there are other skills that are completely different. The Language notebooks are all totally different because there are hardly any standards that overlap. I hope this answers your questions. This is a tough one for me to answer in this little box. The notebook file and pictures show the standards in order just for the simplicity of putting the file together to sell. I don't teach the standards in order. I do group the Literature standards together, the Informational standards together, and the Foundational Skills together in the notebook, but the standards are not in order by standard number under each section.
