I just love mysteries, don’t you? To be honest I just love the mystery unit that Beth Newingham uses in her classroom and has graciously shared with us. It is full of inspiration or at least I thought so.
This unit has all things mystery but with a primary focus. The vocabulary is tied to story elements the students are familiar with (problem, solution, characters, setting, and events) but requires the students to expand on this using mystery vocabulary terms. I have found that this really helps them comprehend the story structure of a mystery.
There are lessons for teaching about the mystery genre, writing and publishing your own mystery, being a detective and creating your own case file, solving a classroom mystery and much, much more. I am sure your students will have tons of educational fun with this suspenseful unit.

Thank you for the feedback and question! As far as the response to literature component you could do a few things, depending on the grade/ focus of your objective.
Every once in a while I like to use the bookmarks as a way for students to respond to what they are reading and that way when I meet with them for independent conferences or for small group they have something to share right away. You could also have them bring it to a shared reading and respond that way.
Another idea is to have them respond to the mystery is by using their spyglass mystery genre wands. These are great if you want to focus on a reading comprehension skill since I have included the thinking stem on there. You can give your students wands depending on what strategy they need to practice the most. (differentiated instruction at work)=)
I have also assigned groups different parts of a mystery (story elements) and then required them to respond to what they think the information they found means. It is kinda like the jigsaw strategy. For example, one group of detectives {students} mission might be to find out what the crime was. Then after they find and record that, I would then ask them to tell be about their thinking as they read over their information. This works great with mini mystery articles, so the text is in front of them. Then bring them together and share, discovering all the components together!
