Young Wolf, the main character in A Mare for Young Wolf, is a young Native American boy who has reached an important moment in his life - selecting and learning to ride his own horse. The choice he makes, however, brings ridicule from his peers, and his desire to prove that he was right all along propels the story to a satisfying conclusion.


This unit consists of 9 pages that include written comprehension questions, a story map, and a page in which the reader must compare Young Wolf to his biggest adversary. Before reading, students are asked to recall what they think they know about the lives led by Native Americans. Afterwards, they are asked to return to this page to see which of those statements were supported as true in the story.
