The purpose of A Year of Word Watching is to get your students excited about vocabulary acquisition! In A Year of Word Watching, students use their monthly calendars to record a word each day that struck them as new, different, or unique. This could have been a word that they learned in school, read in a book or magazine, heard in a conversation, saw in a newspaper, or heard on television. At the end of the month, students select their favorite word to record on their monthly in-depth vocabulary word investigation sheet(page 3 in this packet.) Students can post these on a monthly vocabulary bulletin board or place them in their monthly portfolios. At the end of the school year, the students will have quite a large collection of new vocabulary words that they can refer back to.

This is a fabulous idea. I do think it would have been better as a word document, rather than a pdf file. I teach in South Africa where we start the school year in January and end in December, so I would have liked to have been able to edit this so that I can add July 2013 and so on to my students. I will still use it, but will have to make my own and obviously I'd have found it much easier to edit yours!

I love this idea and can't wait to use it with my fifth graders this year! I think I will have them add each month to their portfolio binders once it's complete to help make it more of a usable resource...something they look to throughout the entire year.

This looks great---I'm not able to open it (the message I get is:
Adobe Reader could not open 'ASchoolYearofWordWatching(1).pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).
Do you have any suggestions on opening it? Thanks so much for any ideas you can offer.

Creating teacher resources has always been a passion of mine! When I began teaching in 1997, I immediately began designing materials and have been doing so ever since. When my husband who is also a teacher told me about TPT, I was so excited!
