A set of 8 labs using apples. I use these to introduce math and science concepts at the beginning of the year using apples during our plant unit. The 8 labs are:
1. Making Good Observations
2. Measuring Your Apples
3. Making Good Predictions
4. Finding the Volume and Surface Area of Your Apple
5. Finding the Number of Seeds in Your Apple
6. Comparing the Interior and Exterior of Your Apple
7. Using Imagery with Apples
8. Comparing Four Different Varieties of Apples
There is also a sheet with information for the teacher. These labs require a few items, but they are a great way to introduce math and science vocab and tools.

We set up stations around the room for each lab, and my 3rd grade gifted students were able to do the activities with minimal assistance. With my 1st/2nd grade group we did them together. Both groups enjoyed the activities and I was able to both assess their current levels of basic science lab skills and instruct students whose skills were lacking.

I have taught for 16 years in a large, urban, public school district (I have taught in three different schools) and I LOVE it! I taught self-contained, multi-age gifted class for past seven years. Prior to this assignment, I taught regular ed 4th and 5th grades. I am now in an at-risk school teaching 5th grade! I am so lucky to have such great students, past and present!
