I use this lesson plan and letter on the first day of school. The letter can easily be adapted to fit your school and your writing program. This lesson teaches students about "about the author" pages and asks that students and parents an about the author (about your student). Students love to read them throughout the year (I have them put them in the writer's notebooks), especially at the end of the year.

After 5 years of teaching 4th grade I am teaching 2nd grade this year. Many lessons plans were ones I used in 4th grade and I'm adding some that I am using with my 2nd graders. Over the years our district has gone through many changes and refocusing. So, each year I have needed to revise my lesson plans in order to fit into new philosophies or curriculum. I hope that my experiences can help some of you.
