This science activity for kids by Karen Ostlund and Sheryl Mercier has them use their senses to observe the features of feathers. After recording their observations on the student sheet, students read Science Notes about the form and function of different kinds of feathers- how the feathers help birds live. Finally, students write a detailed descriptive paragraph about their feather.

Different animals use their body parts in different ways to see, hear, grasp objects, protect themselves, move from place to place, and seek, find, and take in food, water and air. Plants also have different parts (roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits) that help them survive, grow, and produce more plants.
By the end of grade 5: Plants and animals have both internal and external structures that serve various functions in growth, survival, behavior, and reproduction.
