My class LOVES doing secret message work. I think they feel like they are little detectives! For Groundhog Day I came up with this twist on secret messages and getting some additional adding and subtracting practice as well. I told them word problems and they filled in the numbers to match my story. For example, I have two apples and went to the store and bought three more. How many apples do I have in all? They filled in the numbers and solved the problem so that they had the equation 2+3=5. Notice they had to pay attention to math symbols! I made sure I told them story problems so that we got the answers 0-10. We then checked answers and used the key to fill in the letters for the secret message.
