The best February, March, or throughout the year writing assignment has arrived! The African American History and Women's History Biography Award Certificates are just in time for Black History and Women's History months! It is a great biography activity that can be used to honor the contributions of African Americans and women. This activity combines social studies, history, language, and technology. Students research the accomplishments of famous African Americans and American women. They use the their information to create an award certificate that highlights the person's achievements and their impact on American society, culture, and history.

The package includes six award templates in Microsoft Word 97/2003. The templates can also be opened in Pages (Mac, IWork) and Open Office/Star Office applications. Each template has areas for your students to add information. There is also a 13-page teacher companion with student handouts and rubrics.

I have used this activity with my students for African American History month and Women's History month with great success. I hope you enjoy using the product in your classroom.

I am entering my nineteenth year as a teacher in Westfield, New Jersey. During this time I have taught 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. This year I will be teaching 3rd grade (looping with 14 of my second graders from last year). My goal has been to encourage my students to become independent and creative thinkers. I am always humbled by what my students remember and the projects that have made an impact on their learning.
