This is a three-week unit designed to teach middle or high school students about the Age of Imperialism and its effects. The unit includes daily lesson plans, a very engaging and interactive simulation, discussion questions/topics, a PowerPoint presentation with a student note sheet, lots of collaborative group work, an extension activity for students who finish quickly, a research assignment with a rubric, and a choice menu assessment. The assignments also are literacy-based, so they will enhance students' reading/writing abilities, as well as give them the social studies content knowledge they need.
Topics in the unit include:
* Vocabulary of the Age of Imperialism
* Why countries created colonies
* What countries colonized others
* The effects of colonization on both the colonized and the colonizer
* The United States' role in colonization
* The Boxer Rebellion
* The Annexation of Hawaii
