I created this project as a way to keep my students engaged at the end of the school year. The activity requires them to pull from concepts learned throughout the year. The concepts include systems of equations, ratios and percents, area and perimeter.
Students were required to make a menu for a themed restaurant. Specific instructions for this are included in the zip file. I have also included a 'rubric' for the menu. I graded the menu on a scale of 100, and counted it as a quiz score. This helped some of my hard working, low performing math students boost their grade. Then I created an accompanying math assignment in which they had to answer questions based on both their menus and mine. I have included jpegs of my menu, so that you can use them with your class. Students are required to solve a system of equations problem using the information on my menu, and then write their own system of equations menu based on theirs. Also, I had the students create a layout of their restaurant with certain conditions. Students then had to calculate the perimeter and area of their restaurants, as well as the area not covered by tables and kitchens. This required the use of percentages. Of course, the mathematical portion of the menu project included questions about sales tax and tips, covering percentages. I counted the mathematical portion of the assignment for 100 points and counted it as two test scores, but you could adjust this to suit the needs of your class. I have included my answer key to the math portion as a jpeg, and it includes the breakdown of points that I assigned for each group of questions.

I am in my sixth year of teaching. My certification is in Math grades 7-12. I began teaching in an IB/Magnet High School in Rochester, NY where I taught Precalculus, Computer Programming, and Math A. After 2 successful years, my family moved to Florida where we could enjoy the sunshine year round. For the past 4 years, I have been teaching in a suburban High School in Florida. In addition to teaching Geometry, Algebra, and AP Calculus AB, I co-chair the math department. I am currently working on my National Board Certification.
