Multi-syllable Nonsense Word Game for Advanced Phonics Learners. This activity will help students practice reading multi-syllable nonsense words which are required in mastering phonics. Words contain blends, digraphs, vowel combinations, long vowels, short vowels, and r-controlled vowels. All words contain two or three-syllables.
Students will take turns reading the nonsense word card drawn. If they read it correctly, they get to keep the card. If they read it incorrectly, the card goes back in the stack. If they draw an "ALIEN" card, they have to give all the cards back and start over. The person with the most cards at the end of the game wins. Students will still need to read these words to their teacher to check for accuracy in pronunciation.
Hope you enjoy this new resource with your students. Please remember to leave feedback.
I am so glad you and your students are enjoying this game. My students did too and asked me to make more. I also have available Springtime Syllables 1-2-3 and Syllables in Space which practice nonsense words as well. If there is a particular theme you would like, I can make more in that theme. Just let me know. Thank you.
Thank you for your purchase and feedback. I also have two similar activities available in my store that you might be interested in. The first one is a FREEBIE :)
Nice to meet you Teresa :) I created this when I realized I didn't have much to help my advanced phonics group with sounding out multisyllable nonsense words. They LOVE this and asked me to make more. Gotta love it!!! So, hence came my NEW FREEBIE Springtime Syllables. Be sure to check it out. So glad you found Alien Attack useful. The new game is similar but you have to watch out for the STORM :)

This is exactly what I was looking for. I have a couple of 2nd grade students who frequently decode the first part of a word and then guess the rest. To do well at this game they'll have to decode the whole word.
These nonsense words are well thought out, including blends, digraphs, and r-controlled vowels.
I may create additional word cards in order to use it with a group of 5 or 6 students. Thank you!
I am so glad that you found this useful for your students. Our students in our district are required to sound out nonsense words to prove that they can decode unfamiliar words. Some have memorized the nonsense words that they are tested on with Lexia CRT, so I created this game to really test their decoding skills. I have really seen a difference on how my students are decoding words and trying to spell words by being forced to break them into syllables. Thank you for your feedback on this game. I appreciate you taking the time to do so. Teachers truly know the value of time.
Rosemarykn - just posted a NEW FREEBIE this weekend you might be interested in, Springtime Syllables. It has 27 multisyllable nonsense words. I increased the number from Alien Attack per your request :) Hope you can use it :)
Thank you for sweet comments. I know how difficult this is, but when our students take the Lexia CRT Test, they have to read words like meppertint, and hoatpeal, and anderspand. Without using the direct words, I created similar patterns of syllables for them to get this type of practice to help them perform better on the multi-syllable part of this test, which they are tested on three times a year. I only have a handful of students who are working at this level, so to meet their needs this game was born :) Hope your students find this activity challenging and rewarding as they grow in their phonics skills.
