Like Mammals of the Woods and American Symbols this unit falls into the category of “Common Core: Informational Reading and More”. I have provided 14 differentiated fluency passages on America's most beloved heroes. Included are tests, art projects, activities, and a timeline that covers from the 1750 to the present. This unit is double the size of my other units, but I am not going to charge you $16. Times are tough, the job we do is tough, and the low price is my way of making quality curriculum affordable.

Please download the 14 page preview. The preview is heavenly, since you can see everything discussed below in detail and pictures....I love pictures!

Heroes covered in this unit:
-Johnny Appleseed
-Betsy Ross
-George Washington
-Helen Keller
-Abe Lincoln
-Harriet Tubman
-Alexander Graham Bell
-Susan B. Anthony
-Amelia Earhart

The fluency passages are differentiated to provide you materials to challenge all levels of reading in your classroom. The differentiation also means that this unit can reach first – third graders.

Each Hero Has:
- differentiated fluency passage
- a test/ reading comprehension page
- background information card to display on timeline
- timeline graphic - full color and approx 10 inches tall

This unit is a whopper. 168 pages of pure joy.
This curriculum takes me from Jan - April as a first grade teacher. I do 1 hero a week, Famous American Friday Fun, and my student's reading goes through the roof. Plus, they are learning about true heroes, building character, and filling up my grade book as we go!

If you have any questions after looking at the "download preview", just ask me. I'll get right back to you.

May your heart and your grade book always be full,
Katie Knight

I don't have a question. I just wanted to tell you how much my students and I loved your packet. We did Johnny Appleseed last week and he was our last famous person. My students were so bummed we didn't have a new one this week. I also put the timeline outside our door and pick 3-4 things we learned about each person and added it weekly to an index card. Many students and teachers have stopped by to check it out! I really hope you get a chance to work on more later in the summer. I will be purchasing it for sure!!

You are too sweet. I will be working on an art pack that adds art for each hero. I might do inventors soon.

Hi there! LOOOOOVE this packet and have been using it weekly with my kiddos :) We just introduced Bessie Coleman today and there is a typo towards the bottom of the 1st reader. Instead of saying "They loved to see her fly!" it says "They loved see to her fly!"

Wasnt sure if you were aware of that or not. :o)

Great products, thanx. Quick question, I bought this product some time ago but I saw how you have it posted on your blog and was wondering why the packet doesn't include a card for "past". If possible would you be able to create the word past and future in black and white like the one that says timeline? Thank you in advance

The artist did not make me a clip art with the words past and present. I had to write those out myself. I think I kept them.... And will try to scan them for you. What is your email?

I love this unit so much! My students have been having a blast making MLK and Abe Lincoln. They can't wait to make Washington next week. The other teachers have been commenting on how great they look too. We took the Abraham Lincoln quiz today and found a mistake on it. Question 3 says "The____ started between" but doesn't finish the sentence. Just wanted to let you know. :)

I have been thinking about a few more as well:
Sojourner Truth, Ruby Bridges, Fredrick Douglass, George Washington Carver, Jesse Owens, and Booker T. Washington

I am so sorry, I cannot do custom color combos. I know how you feel though, I like to keep my colors uniform too.

I read your comment about making some more heroes...I have a few suggestions!
Fredrick Douglass, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Jackie Robinson, The Wright Brothers, John Quincy Adams. Since it's black history month, I was thinking that this would be a great packet to integrate American Heroes of all races throughout the year.

Thanks!

I just purchased the packet but have a question about the reading passages. There are two or three of each. The first might have 134 the next has less, maybe 130 and the third has even more than the first. I don't understand what or how these are leveled. Could you explain? Also, I am unable to print after page 81. The rest of the packet won't print. Has this happened with anyone else? Thank you!

Hi,
I have the same question as Just a Primary Girl. I was wondering if I could buy just the Washington and Lincoln portion of the packet.

Hi
We only teach 2 of these awesome Heros. Was wondering if you would separate? I would live the George and Abe. We had to cover Mlk last week. Or if you are willing to sell the crafts separately. Please let me know. These are adorable. Justaprimarygirl@yahoo.com

Love this and plan to use it up until March. Is there any way you could create one for Dr. Seuss? It could conclude my bio unit and tie in Seuss at the same time! I'd be glad to purchase it too!

That would be smart! The artist who made the clip art may not be able to do it in time..... I am making a list of new heroes for the next packet... Dr. Seuss, Walt Disney.....

This is wonderful! Are you the one creating the smart art? If the answer is yes, maybe you can help me. Which courses or classes do you recommend to create this kind of work?
As soon I try this lessons with my ESL/Bilingual students I will let you know the results!! Thank you for creating this awesome packet!!!

I create the smart art. But I have never taken an art class. I get inspiration from clip art I am using and go from there. Good luck and have fun!

I have a question about the Helen Keller background information card. it says This passage is about she learned to communicate. Should it be how she learned to communicate? The wording doesn't flow right to me. IDK. But I can say I can't wait to use it with my class!

There is also a misspelling in the Martin Luther King Jr Quiz on question 2. The t was left out of his name.

This is my first purchase from TPT. I LOVE Social Studies! I've only previewed the first 11 pages of the packet, including the three fluency pages about Helen Keller. I've found a few typo/grammar errors, but my comment is about the first two sentences of the 2nd and 3rd fluency passages. They both begin with, "When Helen was born she was just like us. She was happy and healthy." That's going to be problematic for my class because I teach students with orthopedic and health impairments. The vast majority of my students were not born healthy and the others have an acquired disability (traumatic brain injury, disease or other health issue which makes them medically fragile). Is there any way to modify the wording? Maybe, "When Helen was born, she was happy and healthy."? I realize my circumstance is the rare exception compared to other elementary classrooms. I'm looking forward to using the materials!

Thank you,
Pam Van Rossum

Real photographs no.... There are too many copyright issues. You can find so many great images ongoogle images. But, it would be like stealing for me to include them in a unit for sale. For classroom use you should be OK to download them... I think.... I usually pull them up and show the kids lots of pictures.
