This is a massive differentiated unit with an MYP IB component. If you have a laborious directive from your district to create an extensive unit using various differentiated methods, this is for you. My school is also an international baccalaureate middle years program authorized school, so I have included a write up of the sports portion of the unit on our MYP Unit Planner.

In this unit, students will learn about 3 major social reform movements during the Antebellum Era of American history. Those reforms are the origins of free education, abolition, and women’s suffrage. Each segment of the unit meets Michigan benchmarks and standards, and extensively uses differentiated techniques. The second half of this unit puts a modern twist on the social reform, through the lens of sports. This part of the unit will draw in students of various abilities and interest levels.

In the enclosed unit you will find the following:

-Specified and defined methods of differentiation and what aspects of the unit addresses them

-Tiered activities and products

-flexible grouping

-specified supplementary materials and their use within the unit (please note that some of the supplementary materials I used were downloaded from Edhelper.com. I included the title of the materials that I used and the authors if you wish to download them from that site)

-the use of Learning Centers/Stations, that help ensure the use of differentiation

-Work Down Bin (this is provided to students during for the group research project during the sports unit).

Now, after all that boring educational terminology, let me tell you that the portion of the unit that combines major sporting events throughout history and their societal impact is really fun and something students will enjoy. I have included the supplemental materials I used for that section.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Grades Taught:

This is my eighth year as a teacher. I taught for two years at a charter school, where I had several different preps ranging from 7th grade social studies, 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th grade language arts. I had no classroom of my own, so I became organized pretty quickly! I currently teach 8th grade English and Social Studies for Bloomfield Hills Public Schools, and I really enjoy both my students and colleagues, with whom I frequently collaborate to create interdisciplinary units.
