"An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" DVD

French director Robert Enrico directed this devastating short masterpiece covering the final moments of a man about to be hanged for sabotage during the Civil War who is suddenly saved when the rope breaks. He then makes his way through hazardous country, trying to finally reach home. The somber mood is emphasized by the sparse movements of the soldiers, the extreme close-ups of the man about to be hung, and the black-and-white camerawork that moves almost painfully slowly between the noose, the water, the trees. Based on a story by Ambrose Bierce, the film won the short film Palme D'Or at the 1962 Cannes Film Festival and a 1964 Academy Award for Best Short Subject, Live Action, and was featured as a special episode of Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone.
Rod Serling bought the 28-minute film to air as the final installment of THE TWILIGHT ZONE series, on February 28, 1964. Monterey Video: Because the DVD is reformatted from old film footage, the picture quality is slightly grainy. Retails new for $24.99. This DVD is used but in very good condition.

Haley has a fifteen-year academic career teaching creative writing, most recently as associate professor of English at Mary Washington College. At the secondary level, she has served as the 11th grade American Literature teacher at Caravel Academy (DE). She has published poetry and literary criticism in a variety of journals and anthologies including Poetry, The Gettysburg Review, Reading Poetry: An Anthology of Poems; Southern Poetry Review, and Mid-American Review. Her collection of poetry, The Logic of Wings. was published by Cherry Grove Collections in 2004. Haley's Instructor's Manual for Harcourt Brace's College Division (FICTIONS: AN ANTHOLOGY OF SHORT STORIES) has been used by post-secondary instructors since 1989.
