One of the toughest challenges high school students face when they come up against programmed tests is the Analogy. Some students find them quite entertaining because they are such a mental challenge. Others tend to run from the task because they require a lot of brain work. Analogy I makes this study fun.
ANALOGY I:: attempts to take some of the fear away. It is a fun, educational game that can be played by one or more players at the same time. It makes for great practice for the big test.
The analogies are challenging enough in themselves, but students will find a rather arrogant on-screen assistant who insists on playing along. Rodney is quite the handful. He is very friendly as long as you are winning, but he becomes rather impatient with you when you are not. He becomes such a pain, in fact, that students will deliberately try to win just to shut him up.
The program uses a CD metaphor. There are five games in all, each one resident on a virtual CD on screen. Scores are kept for each game as well as a total. There is a help screen to familiarize students with the analogy concept, and they may print a final report, if you plan on using this as a graded project.
The concept is simple. Students are given a pair of words and five sets of words that could be matched. Students use the mouse to make a selection. If they are correct, Rodney gets all smiles, and the students are rewarded with points. If they incorrect, they don't get any points, and they have to deal with the wrath of Rodney. Nice sound effects and graphics accompany the games. There are five separate games of 10 analogies each. Our tests have shown that the entire game can be completed in one class by industrious students.
