Speak is a novel rich in figurative language, so I wanted something that addressed directly. The best way to describe this activity is to include the directions from the acutal print-out itself. This is a good assignment to get students connecting with, exploring, analyzing and responding to the text. It has three different exercises.

Activity One: Read the examples of figurative language from Speak listed below. Label each example with an S for simile, an M for metaphor, or a P for personification. (They are actual lines from the novel that I have selected.)

Activity Two: Use your book to find additional examples of figurative language you have identified while reading Speak. Indicate the page number where you found each quotation.

Activity Three: Select an example of figurative language found in Speak and illustrate it. You may use an example from this sheet or another example from the novel. In the space provided attempt to draw what the author is saying literally, making the illustration humorous and showing how figurative language helps readers picture what is going on.

These three activities are economically designed to fit on the front and back of one sheet.

Answers included.

I would love to hear how this works for you!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

This is my 10th year teaching English and 6th year with journalism. I have experience at the middle school, high school, and college level. Rural and suburban. Regular, honors, and inclusion. I also teach Prek-k in Children's Church and K-2 in Awanas!! So my range is very wide. I see English everywhere. I know that sounded a little "Sixth Sense"ish, but it's true! I can't even walk into McDonald's without noticing the pun on a sign in their window. What's worse, is I actually stopped to take a picture for use in my class! To me, my job is about teaching students to see, make, and appreciate those connections. The world around them is full of opportunity, and I want them to notice that and seize it. In addition to all this... I am also working as a common core ELA training specialist. My store is geared directly to helping teachers integrate common core in their classrooms smoothly and effectively. Most everything, as well, has been tested in my classroom with a variety of students, so I am confident that these products work!
