Is your class studying animals? This is a set of 4 sorting center activities for the characteristics of animals. The sorts deal with: where animals live, how many legs animals have, types of skin coverings, and how animals get around. Students will cut out pictures of animals and sort between four categories, which means no cutting and laminating for you!

These sorts also coordinate with my Animal Research Book for Primary Grades.

I ordered this and have been using this in my classroom. The students are enjoying it, but I do have a question. Under the one about skin coverings, one of the lables is shell, there are no animals pictured that have a shell. The topic of how many legs doesn't have a picture of an animal with 8 legs to go under the label of eight legs. Is there something I am missing?

Thank you for your question. There is nothing in those sections on purpose. Whenever I do sorts, I try to talk to my kids about the fact that although there is a category, that doesn't automatically mean something will fall there. This prepares them for the type of thinking that goes into "all of the above" and "none of the above" questions that comes up on my standardized tests, as well as many real world situations. Sometimes, during a review, I will ask students to draw in something that might have fit into that empty category.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I currently teach a mixed age class of 3rd and 4th graders at the International School of Morocco. Previously, I have taught 1st grade and 3rd grade, as well as teaching all grade levels in the computer lab at a Title I school in Georgia. I have taught both high income and low-income school students, and find that no matter where I teach, most kids need to look at every problem from 12 different angles. Although it is challenging, it is also incredibly rewarding.
