We're going to the zoo... how about you? Here is a collection of literacy activities with a zoo animal theme that your students are sure to enjoy. Many are designed for use in literacy centers. Included are:
* 2 hands-on word puzzles for cvc pattern words and early sight words
* 5 illustrated story cards for your students to read independently
* At the Zoo!: a board game for you to program according to the specifics of your curriculum
* A class graph to complete together, with a follow-up interviewing and writing activity
* The Mixed-Up Zoo: sentences divided by subject/predicate for students to reassemble, with a self-check card and a student response sheet
* 24 colorful animal picture cards with 6 suggestions for using them with your class
* 6 graphic organizers: 2 each of brace maps, tree charts, and double bubbles
* A beginning sound picture sort
* A syllable picture sort
* 16 word cards for sentence building, with differentiated follow-up activities at 2 levels

I've been teaching for 26 years, with the majority of my experience being in first grade. I taught Reading Recovery for 5 years, and that experience has impacted every day of my teaching since! For the past 10 years, I've enjoyed teaching a first grade literacy intervention class. It has also been my privilege to present various workshops on literacy topics at the local, state, and national level. My goal is to ignite a passion for reading and writing in young learners.
