The Apartheid Cartoon/Graphic Short Story is a worksheet that requires analytical thinking, yet looks simple and students love it. It asks students to create their own list of events defining apartheid and describing how it was dismantled; this could include the early Dutch settlements, the Boer War, the discovery of gold and diamonds in South Africa, a personal story like Steve Biko's, or examples of Apartheid laws. I highly recommend William Bigelow's "Strangers in their Own Country," Africa World Press, Trenton, NJ, Student Handout #8: Apartheid "Laws of South Africa" for a list of specific laws. The second half of my worksheet can include the international economic and professional sports boycott of South Africa, Mandela's negotiations with the government while imprisoned, F.W. DeKlerk's decision to hold a referendum on ending apartheid, the referendum itself, and the first free multi-party elections in South Africa in 1994. You can extend the activity by making it two separate graphic short stories if you wish. Students illustrate how the events connect together in their drawings.
Students who are artists or kinesthetic learners really enjoy this activity.
