### PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Have fun with these math-related art lessons. Students will work with elements of art: line, shape, color, pattern, texture and space while exploring bilateral and radial symmetry.

Geometrical Face Collage requires students to think about what geometric shapes might be used to represent facial features. More advanced students can be asked to consider negative space as part of their design. Symmetrical Cityscapes is a foolproof drawing lesson that produces colorful, fanciful results and gives students the opportunity to apply their knowledge of the concept of bilateral symmetry. Sunflakes is a collage activity that is inspired by a poem with the same title, written by Frank Asch. It gives students practice in estimating distance while creating a radial design in warm colors.

Each of the lessons includes the following:

- a list of art concepts and skills addressed
- materials list
- targeted art and related vocabulary
- detailed steps for introducing the lesson
- directions for the art activity itself
- ideas for extending or varying the lessons
- ideas for looking at and discussing art
- ideas for connecting the activity to other curricular areas
- at least one writing extension

Also included in this packet is a printable color wheel with definitions for color combinations.

Because I teach in California, each lesson also includes a list of the California Visual Arts Standards addressed for suggested grade levels. Please note that listed grade levels are suggestions only; any of these lessons can be simplified or made more complex to work for any elementary grade.

Also included in the packet is the url for my blog, Creating Art With Kids, where readers can find detailed descriptions and helpful tips about the process of teaching many of my art lessons.

Two of the lessons in this packet are also available as follows:
Symmetrical Cityscapes is available as a single lesson titled Cityscapes With Symmetry.
Another version of Geometric Face Collage, called Abstract Face Collage, is bundled with two other lessons in Art Lessons With Faces..

Other related art lessons you might enjoy:

Creating Art With Kids lessons are designed to focus primarily on the creative process. They are intended to be open-ended enough to encourage student creativity and detailed enough to give teachers clear direction.

We had so much fun, their math teacher wanted the lesson. I sent her to your sites.
Hello sirtarl! Thank you so much for recommending my lessons to your students' math teacher. There are so many ways that math and art intersect; I have always enjoyed using art activities to reinforce math concepts and vocabulary. Thanks again!

Once again, thanks Renee, my class loved this activity!
Hi gomima.... Glad your class enjoyed these! Another great way to reinforce a math concept far beyond the "draw a line of symmetry" exercise. :-)

Thank you for the excellent unit. I have little experience teaching visual art and I find your unit is an excellent resource. I really do appreciate how you have incorporated the vocabulary and how it can be connected to different subjects (math, literacy)
Hi lstjean.... Thank you for your feedback. I hope these art lessons will spur you on to doing more with visual art in your classroom!

I did the cityscape lesson with my grade six class today, and they absolutely loved it. We have art for a four block period, and it kept them busy throughout the period. I introduced some pictures of actual city scapes first and intertwined it with the symmetry we are doing in math right now. Loved. Thank you!!
Hello Sharilee.... This is one of my favorite lessons! It is so much fun and you really get to see which students *get* symmetry. I'm glad your students enjoyed it!

I love the cityscape idea.
The cityscape lesson has been a favorite among teachers. Many have requested that I teach the lesson to their class in subsequent years, or when they've seen the display. Some students will have a little difficulty getting that first building right in the center, but I tell them that's ok... just makes it even more interesting!

Great! Teaching art for the first time and need easy to follow plans.
Thank you, rimclark, for your feedback. I try to write my art lessons with teachers in mind who may not necessarily be art-oriented. I want them to be easy to follow and understand, so your feedback is valuable to me. Have fun!
