Students don't like getting the messages, so after a week or so, you'll notice improvement and you won't have to be handing them out as much. I plan to start the new school year with this system, as the group coming up has the reputation of being"tough" to handle.
Question: There are a lot of different (and great)"I need to" cards. How do you organize them so they are immediately accessible? I want to be able to implement this with the least amount of extra work on my part.

Hi Longtime Teacher! Great question! Saving time is important. Here are a couple more suggestions since I've been using them.I keep a list of the reminders with me on a clipboard. I put the cards in an index card box (plastic with a snap on lid). I have tabbed separators (thicker paper so they stand up well) with the numbers so they're quick to find. I also make a lot of them so the box is kept fairly full. If I'm working with a small group, I'll keep the box and clip board with me so I can hand them directly to the kids in that particular group.
With a larger or whole group, I'll tell a student to go to the box and get the card of the reminder he or she needs to have. I'll tell the student the number of the card, not the behavior. After awhile you'll notice there are reminder cards that are used a lot so you won't have to refer to the chart. :)
Behavior usually changes quickly when the kids have to retrieve them from the box, because they don't like to be seen going to the box. :) This might be more work when you first begin, but after time goes by, you'll notice you'll be giving out less and less of the "needs to" reminders :)

Orangepeonee Again, I have to thank you for your kind comment and rating. About two years ago, the majority of students in one of my classes didn't work well together, never turned work in when it was due and just didn't seem to want to learn. I knew I had to do something, so I came up with this system. Once I started using it consistently, the changes were amazing. i handed out fewer and fewer of the cards and rewarded those who demonstrated positive changes. Parents were very appreciative and said they were seeing changes at home too. It was a win/win for all! :)

Do the students sign the cards? Then what do they do with them? It looks like some students wouuld be filling out the same cards all year long? Any consequences? I suppose these questions are answered in the explaination after purchase, right?

Hi Ptucker22 :) Yes, the instructions of what the kids do once they sign them and how I use them during parent conferences are in the packet. For those who continually repeat the same behavior, intervention is suggested by including parents. There's also a suggestion about the list. Hope this helps!

I've been an elementary and middle school teacher for over 25 years in Connecticut. I also served on the Weekly Reader National Teacher Advisory Board as the Connecticut State Rep and appeared on "Good Morning, America" in 1993, to celebrate the 65th anniversary of Weekly Reader. I worked closely with the other state representatives and Weekly Reader's editorial, graphic arts and marketing departments. I was a NASA/Lockheed Martin Mission Systems "Student Signatures in Space" teacher for ten years. My students, Board of Ed, staff and others signed NASA posters that accompanied astronauts during space missions aboard the space shuttles. One of the posters was signed by all students in our school, teachers, parents and the Board of Ed. It returned from space, and was hung in the school's Media Center.
