This journal will provide you with a lot of important information about your new students.
The journal has two parts:
1) Skills review - 10 days of morning/daily work that will expose students' proficiency with second grade prerequisite skills, such as: spelling patterns, syllables, plurals, past tense verbs, prefixes/suffixes, compound words, parts of speech, capitalization rules, counting coins, fractions, place value, comparing numbers, and multiplication readiness.
An answer key has been included for each skills page.
2) Writing topics: Ten days of writing topics that will give you insight into your students' lives and writing/spelling abilities. Topics include: "My Family", "What I Do After School", "My Friends", "My Summer Vacation" and more. (PRIMARY-LINED and INTERMEDIATE-LINED journal pages provided)

Can't wait to try this next year during the first couple weeks. It's very thorough. Thank you! Since it's 49 pages, though, it'd be great to cut down on some of the unnecessary borders, just in the interest of saving ink (especially since our school does not provide printers or ink!).

The material is excellent.....If I could change something.....as a 3rd grade teacher, I want a font the students could clearly read. I think the font use is not student friendly....it is a cute font for teacher directions and presentation, but a different font for the students work pages. Our written "computerized" words are to be models for students at all learning levels and the creative font may be hard to read for some students who have not learned to be flexible in various written texts.
Also, I would prefer the writing space for the journal thoughts not to be 2nd grade writing lines, but just straight lines possibly at a 22 pt.

I totally get what you are saying, Debbie.
In general, I do try to be very careful with my fonts. I try to pick fonts without random capitalization, etc... I thought this font was ok. (If you haven't used this with your students yet, it might encourage you to know that my 2nd graders had no problem reading their journal, which uses the same font.) But, I agree there are many other fonts out there that would be easier to read. Point taken :)

This is a very nice beginning of the year review booklet. The graphics are cute. I think the students will be happy to find this on their desks when they enter. I will appreciate having writing samples from the first week.
