I am looking for a system to organize students to help in the classroom. I have jobs such as errands, passing out notices/papers...no problems with these. It is the 'organizing recycling, picking up papers from the floor' that is challenging to get helpers. I teach a gr.6/7 and would like a fun way to get students to take ownership for keeping the class clean. Do you have a ideas for that?

Hello! I don't have any resources posted on that topic. Just off the top of my head... Put every job you need completed on a piece of paper. If you need 4 people to clean up the floor - write "clean up the floor" on four pieces of paper or index cards, we'll say,...three to do recycling etc. Have a scavenger hunt! Post the jobs - faced down all around your room (under chairs, desks, by the bookshelf, by your desk...etc. Whatever paper they find is their job for the month. Have a new hunt the next month. OR you could do a "mission impossible" type thing. Come in with sealed envelopes and tell them that this is their mission - should they choose to accept it. Inside each - their task for the month - if done to your satisfaction...perhaps they'll receive a reward... Just some thoughts...

Thanks, I will keep looking at your site! :-) Place value would be a good starting place.

Hi, I am teaching a grade 6-8 class in Barrie. Last year with my regular class I started with place value. I'm confused where to start to keep the motivated but still cover 3 or more grade levels. What grade do you have and what unit are you starting with? Thanks! :-)

Wow - Gr. 6-8 in one room! Well, I suppose there are always such a variety of ability levels anyway in most classrooms - mine for sure.

I think that place value is a great place to start. I usually start with pre-assessments and review based on what the pre-assessments tell me. Then we jump into the book which I am supposed to follow in order. It starts out with transformational geometry.

Place value is essential, though, for so many other things. They need to know if a number is in the millions or billions AND they need to be able to round that number properly to any value that you throw at them. I have some ideas for place value activities - I'll start putting them together this evening or tomorrow.

As for keeping them motivated, if you can give them a reason for what they're doing, a project with a purpose and context - you'll all have a more enjoyable year.

Find out what they're into right away - do some kind of survey with them. There is a survey - ready to go in the package that I combined. There's also my pre-assessment for free in my TpT store that may be suitable for you. If they're into hockey, trucks or video games - figure out a way to incorporate those into your curriculum with math projects. Projects are great especially for combined classes, because they're easier to differentiate and modify. I hope this helps. Keep an eye on my store this year as I'll be posting lots of math resources. Don't forget to check out the combined classroom management package - I think you'll be happy with it.

What unit are you planning on doing first? This will be my first year on TpT and teaching (I just started TpT in February of this year while I was on mat leave.) I'm back to school in September and so I'll be posting my lessons as I'm doing them with my class. If you give me some specifics, I'll hit those topics first:)

Hello! It does not. However, if you like I can add a new product later today and package the two for a little cheaper. I'm away from home until this evening, but I will get to it for sure. I could also throw in a few of the other $1.00 products that would be suitable as well and charge $25 for the whole package.

Thanks for your interest. Please become a follower and you'll get an email when I post the new combo pack of resources.

If there are any other products that you'd like combined - let me know!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching for 6 years now. I currently teach Grade 7 Math, Social Studies, Language Arts, and Health but I have taught grades 3 to 9, multiple subjects. My passion is teaching Math, for sure. I love the challenges that middle school students bring to the room every day. It's a very special age to be a part of. They teach me so much.
