This is a 5 or 6 day unit designed to introduce ELD 1 students to the true story behind the ship and the tragedy and to familiarize them with several simple literary terms through a study of James Cameron's film, Titanic. This is a very comprehensive unit and one which can be very interesting, educational, and entertaining for ELD students. It is unsinkable!
Given this year marks the 100th anniversary of the ship's sinking and the 15th anniversary of the film, this unit is not only very interesting for students but also timely!
There are two short non-fiction reading assignments filled with facts about the ship and its sinking. Each has a simple assignment to measure comprehension.
As an intro to the film, there is a template for notes for the story terms character, characterization, conflict, plot, and several others.
Last, there are four different assignments meant for students to demonstrate what they learned about story terms by analyzing James Cameron's film Titanic.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Grades Taught:
Subject Area:

I am a retired language teacher with 30 years of experience teaching French and ESL at the high school level. I helped to create the ESL program at our school when it became clear in the mid 1990's that our immigrant student population was growing very quickly , and we had no plan for how to educate them effectively. While I loved teaching French, teaching ESL was my passion! I taught everything from grammar to reading and usually found myself creating all my own materials as there was very little to choose from in the first several years of our program.
