This book is a great way to teach students how to use context clues in order to find the meanings of unknown words! Using the book, "Baloney", by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith, students need to fill in the chart of unknown words with the meaning of each as well as the clues in the text and illustrations that helped them to find the meaning. At the end of this activity, I have them retell the story with their meanings in the place of the unknown words!
There is also a poster with the definition of "context clues" (2 versions)!

I have also used this book as a companion picture book to the novel, "Frindle", by Andrew Clements! They work really well together!

My third grade students were having a really hard time understanding context clues. This was a fun way for them to gain an understanding of how to use context clues. They loved the book and activity!
