What grades have you used Hunger Games in? I am hesitant to use it with my sixth graders because of the violence and theme of kids killing kids. I know my students would like it, but I am worried about parent response.

I used it with my 4th/5th grade self-contained GT class. I wrote a letter about a month before we read it and gave parents a "heads-up". They didn't seem to mind the violence aspect (since it is not too over the top) and were glad there were no "love" issues. Because we did it in class together, discussing the events, etc., I think the parents were glad (instead of the kids just reading it on their own with no support). You could always send out a letter and see what response you get... Good luck! It is a great read, I hope you can use it! :)

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have taught for 16 years in a large, urban, public school district (I have taught in three different schools) and I LOVE it! I taught self-contained, multi-age gifted class for past seven years. Prior to this assignment, I taught regular ed 4th and 5th grades. I am now in an at-risk school teaching 5th grade! I am so lucky to have such great students, past and present!
