This essay assignment works well as a preliminary gauge of students' writing abilities at the start of any course. I use it to introduce myself to my students, to get to know them a bit better, and to get an idea of their strengths and weaknesses in writing essays. The file includes an explanation/requirements of the assignment, an example written by me, and a rubric that can be used for scoring the essay.
