Big Number is my students' all time favorite game! It provides motivation for the learner to practice place value by positioning random numbers on a game board to obtain the greatest number. It is easy to adapt to any grade level, for a whole class, or a small group of children. Big Number can easily become a part of a math lesson or be used as a center activity.
Seven game boards are included in this eleven page resource packet. The game boards vary in difficultly beginning with only two places, the ones and tens. Game Board #5 goes to the hundred thousands place and requires the learner to decide where to place six different numbers. All the games have been developed to practice place value using problem solving strategies, reasoning, and intelligent practice. Several children's books that feature about place value are listed at the end of the handout.
I have played Big Number with primary and intermediate students as well as with middle schoolers. It is always one that my students eagerly look forward to with enthusiasm and consistently ask to play it again!

My kids love playing this as a game with a deck of cards. We try to make the highest/lowest numbers with the cards drawn. They then must figure out who is the winner. The winner must read the number correctly to get the point for the round. When I pointed out all they were practicing, they laughed and said they were just having fun!

It's amazing to observe how fast the students learn where to put the digits to make the BIG Number. Sometimes, I would reverse the directions, and have them make the SMALLEST number.

My focus is mathematics while my husband's is science. We never want to do anything else because we love it! My teaching style is hands-on and energetic while using diverse teaching strategies.
