Big Word of the Week - Reading Strategy Approach PDF file

A whole class modelled reading and spelling activity.
These word cards can be used on a weekly basis to model, introduce and revisit reading strategies that you are covering.
Explicit teaching of strategies to read difficult words will give children confidence to tackle reading independently.
These words have been chosen to help you teach a range of strategies such as find the smaller word inside, break it up, point to the word, does it sound right and more. Children will call on skills and knowledge of letter sound relationships to help read the word in a large group.
Recommendations:
Cut up and laminate each word.
Place it on the board or easel permanently for the week.
Place all reading strategies around this word. If you have observed a strategy children are generally neglecting you can choose the word to suit this strategy.
Prompt children to revisit the strategy cards and ask open-ended questions to prompt problem solving. It will be important for children to take turns and not call out!
Model the strategies and encourage all attempts.
Refocus this strategy during guided and independent reading time, including silent and more informal reading. Ask children what strategy they used to read this word (in guided reading time) and name it by referring back to the reading strategy cards.
Use merit awards or some kind or social reward system to promote students achievements, see the reading award in the Reading Programming BLM - Ebook.

This might be a bit too advanced for my kids, however I do have it up and have gotten students to write sentences using the week's word. Never to early to learn, right? Love the exposure without pressure. Thank you!

Thanks for your feedback, that's great to hear though. It does require higher order thinking and explicit role-modeling of how and what strategies to use. I saw it done with end of year kindy's and I have used similar, lengthy words with grade one. The more you model and practice, the more they absorb the strategies and take them on for themselves. It's a great idea to tackle one lengthy word a week. You might also like our reading strategy cards or bookmarks, I usually refer back to them as we tackle words. The big words are a great way to model and brainstorm strategies with the whole class. The kids love it when you pretend to get stuck and ask for possible strategies!!!
