INTRODUCTION:
All living things need energy to carry out metabolic activities. Animals -- unlike many plants, protists, and bacteria -- do not have the means to get energy directly from sunlight or simple inorganic chemicals. The energy requirements of animals must be met by taking in food. Food supplies energy for all animals -- without it we could not live. The quantity of energy stored in food is of great interest to humans. Not all foods contain the same amount of energy, nor are all foods equally nutritious for you.

The energy content of food can be determined by burning a sample of food in a device called a calorimeter. Heat energy released by combustion is absorbed by a container of water. Any rise in water temperature is measured and then used to determine the value of the heat energy released by the burning food sample. Heat energy is expressed in units called calories. One calorie is the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius. This unit, however is too small for evaluating food energy. A Calorie, which is equal to 1000 calories, is used to measure food energy.


PURPOSE:
1. To construct a simple calorimeter and use it to measure the amount of heat energy contained in certain foods.
2. To determine the energy content of three foods.
3. To compare the energy content of different foods.
