This set of 5 group readers, which can be used for guided reading or Readers Theater, was written by me,Sue Russell, in celebration of Black History. They identify some of the key events and key figures instrumental in the struggle against discrimination and segregation e.g. Harriet Tubman from 'Heroes of the Underground Railroad', Sojourner Truth from 'Amazing Women in the American Civil Rights Movement', Martin Luther and Nelson Mandela - all these 'mini plays' taken from other sets of group readers such as 'Amazing Women', 'American Heroes' and 'Famous People of the 20th Century'.
Please note: Teaching time of 40 minutes is very approximate, depending on time spent on reading and answering quiz questions.
These are all available off my website www.plays-r-ussell.com These group readers all come with quizzes and are an excellent classroom resource - for either reading or performance.

I taught in the U.K. for 15 years - temporary and permanent positions plus supply/substitute teaching. I taught all year groups at primary/elementary level and have done some substitute teaching since arriving in the USA. My degree was in History so I always particularly enjoyed teaching this subject, and creating class plays/assemblies around what I was teaching in the classroom - whether it be Ancient Egyptians or King Henry VIII and his Six Wives!
