Students will compete using toothpicks and black-eyed peas to build a structure. The structure must meet certain specifications. We use dried black-eyed peas that are soaked in water overnight. The peas are used as connectors. As the peas dry out, they will shrink and tighten up around the toothpicks making very secure joints. The structures are then tested to see how many pennies they can hold.
