What is so great about block scheduling?
The main reason districts avoid block scheduling is due to standardized test score data, even though research shows that 4x4 block scheduling serves the individual student's learning. A student who changes classes seven times a day has 25-30 minutes of hall time while a student on block schedule has only 15 minutes of hall time, which provides more time for learning! That is an extra 22.5 hours over a semester! Get the PowerPoint to see so many other benefits!
Who could be against block scheduling?
The main reasons some teachers oppose block scheduling is because they are either untrained, unskilled, or unwilling to use diverse learning strategies to prevent students from "being bored" in a 90 minute class. Instead of making students leave the room to go to another class to get "unbored," why can't imaginative teachers get students up out of their seats and give them social time that is related to learning?
