Yes, that's exactly along my lines. Do you have any other science lesson plans for first grade...possibly snow related? That's our next theme and I really like the way you lay out your lessons. If so, I'd definitely be interested.

I don't have any more that are snow related but my States of Matter unit is for first grade and has lots of fun experiments in it! Also, if you are looking for literacy material for polar animals to integrate into your science unit, my Winter Writing Pack is filled with polar animal material. :) Enjoy!

Okay... so would the main objective be how animals adapt to their environment if I am doing this lesson during our penguin theme? I'm a student teacher right now, and just trying to make sure my standards align. Thanks for your help! :)

I think that would be appropriate. Again, you'll want to check your grade level standards and see if adaptation exists in yours. if not, you can focus on a standard that deals with scientific process.

Students will demonstrate an understanding that penguins and other polar animals use blubber to survive in their environment by completing a science experiment and sharing their observations through drawing and writing.

Is this along the lines you're thinking? I hope this helps. The lab report will allow your students to show their understanding of how animals survive. Good luck! :) Student teaching is such an exciting time!! :)
