This self-paced instructional booklet presents prefixes and their meanings in an easy-to-learn, contextual way. Pages are set in pairs. The first page explains the meaning of the prefix and shows some examples. The second page provides practice adding the prefix to root words. The root words are embedded in sentences to provide richer context. The file is a pdf, which can be printed out, cut apart, and assembled into a booklet. I use 4x6" brag books, which can be picked up for a dollar or two at craft stores or dollar stores. You could also cut the pages in half and laminate them for use as single cards. When cut apart, there are 36 pages (covering eighteen prefix meanings), plus a cover page and answer keys. I've used this with my third graders and they love it! An Intelligent By Design product.
Pair this with Book of Suffixes.
CCSS Reading standard for Grade 2 3.d "Decode words with common prefixes and suffixes."
CCSS Reading standard for Grade 3 3.a "Grade 3 3.a Identify and know the meaning of the most common prefixes and derivational suffixes."
CCSS Language standard for Grade 2 4.b "Determine the meaning of the new word formed when a known prefix is added to a known word."
I really loved this - I used the suggestion of putting them into a photo 'brag' book. Thank you, it is a valuable resource in my spelling activities basket.
