Being able to manipulate sounds is a very important skill for beginning readers and this activity allows students to master the skill while having fun! Place the broken heart pieces without a yellow dot face up on a flat surface. Place the broken heart pieces with a yellow dot in a container. Students pick a broken heart piece with a yellow dot and name the picture. Have students identify the Initial sound in the word. Then students delete the initial sound and say the new word. Students locate the broken heart piece that has a picture of the new word to make the heart. This is great for a Literacy Workstation or student's can work independently. You can also use this activity in your guided reading groups for struggling readers. Perfect addition to your Valentine's Day or February Thematic Unit. Brought to you by Mrs. Horvath's Kinder
