I purchased this unit in 2007. I found it so helpful that when we studied The Outsiders, I purchased again from Secondary Solutions. The lesson formats are clear and concise. Students develop a routine when studying the text and strategies align with the Common Core. Excellent resource! My student population is special education, 6-8 in a day-treatment setting. I was able to modify lessons easily.

This is one of the more comprehensive novel units I have found. I find the Standards Focus and Assessment Preparation portions of the unit to be very well done and valuable elements of understanding and internalizing the elements of literature, writing for a purpose, and language learning in general. I recommend this novel unit as a stand-alone or to supplement additional instructional objectives.

Lots of great material. Just a little disappointed that each assignment doesn't have clearly indicated the CC Standard it addresses. I am required to indicate on every assignment which is being met and that is what I was hoping for in this guide. I will have to go through each assignment and match them up.

Thanks for your question. As far as difficulty level of the novel itself, I think it is perfect for 5th grade. The activities and worksheets of the Literature Guide for Bud Not Buddy are varied, ranging from 5th to 7th grade level work. Some activities will be perfect for the 5th grade level, others may provide more of a challenge for those at the 5th grade level. I have tried to provide enough choices that all these grade levels (and learning abilities) have enough work. Secondary Solutions is the endeavor of a high school English teacher who could never seem to find appropriate materials to help her students master the necessary concepts at the secondary level. She grew tired of spending countless hours researching, creating, writing, and revising lesson plans, worksheets, quizzes, tests and extension activities to motivate and inspire her students, and at the same time, address those ominous content standards! Before the inception of Secondary Solutions, materials that were available were either juvenile in nature, skimpy in content, or were moderately engaging activities that did not come close to meeting the content standards on which her students were being tested. Frustrated and tired of trying to get by with inappropriate, inane lessons, she finally decided that if the right materials were going to be available to her and other teachers, she was going to have to make them herself! Mrs. Bowers set to work to create one of the most comprehensive and innovative Literature Guide sets on the market. Joined by a middle school teacher with 21 years of secondary school experience, Secondary Solutions began, and has matured into a specialized team of intermediate and secondary teachers who have developed for you a set of materials unsurpassed by all others.
