This is a hands-on math graphing activity for 1st, 2nd or 3rd graders. It includes easy to read directions so that primary children may complete the activity independently. Children use colored plastic counting bears to create two graphs, one vertical and one horizontal, then answer several questions about their graphs. This is just one of many kid-tested activities offered by Terry Palmieri and available here.

Thank you for posting! I am glad you like the graphing activity! Graphing certainly IS an important skill, one which sometimes gets overlooked in the early grades. I hope your students enjoy using the bears as much as my little people have. This has always been one of their favorite activities! And since the results are different each time, it can be used over and over again.

Hello and thanks for your suggestion! I'll try to revise this activity so it can be printed one on each side of the paper (always trying to save paper)! I have used this activity with both 1st and 2nd graders and they had no trouble coloring the squares the way they are, but I do think your suggestion would make it even easier for them! I'll post the new format and since it is FREE, you can download it again. Thanks.

I just looked at this activity again and realized that the reason I put both graphs on the same page was so the children can see the comparison of the Vertical and Horizontal graphs. I still think I'll revise it, but I'll also include it the way it is for those who want to use it as a comparison lesson! Happy teaching!
