Here are some very useful handouts to use while teaching the business letter. Once the students have these handouts, there are many ways for them to practice.
This bundle contains:
ØA handout with specific, clear directions on what information belongs in each section of a business letter.
ØA sample letter with superimposed labels explaining each component of a business letter.
ØA handout with a series of sample sentences and starters for each of the three kinds of paragraphs in a business letter.
ØAn additional sample letter that I wrote seeking a teaching job—this is probably not much help, but it’s in the file.
ØA brief explanation of what I do with these handouts to teach the skill of writing a business letter.
You can have the students write business letters to actual businesses in the area, requesting sample products, or even interviews for employment.
You can have students write business letters to fictional characters, from the book you are currently reading, for example.
You can bring in a few pages from the classifieds section of the newspaper and have students write cover letters for jobs from the newspaper.

Language and Composition, ESL/ELD, Resource English, freshman through senior English.
