In this LETS MAKE A FIELD GUIDE butterfly and caterpillar packet, students use their observation skills to sketch caterpillars and butterflies. I have included general directions for teaching children to observe shapes. Also included in this packet are directions and paper for how to create the field guide in 3 levels. A worksheet for labeling the parts of a butterfly and the butterfly life cycle is included as well as 2 drawing activities for how caterpillars protect themselves and how butterflies use their wings. Students use their scientific skills to create a project that shows how butterfly wings are made of scales. A fun watercolor butterfly activity is also included. An original book with full color illustrations of the butterflies and their caterpillars can be used as an introduction to the unit.

When printed, several pages had a blue tint to them. I printed at home and school and the blue tint was still present.
Also, it would be nice to have a master copy of the butterfly without the magnifying glass.

The blue tint is there because the pages in which you are referring are hand drawn. When I tried to make the background transparent, the drawing became fuzzy, so I had to make a decision - light blue tint or fuzzy. I went with the tint because when I printed it out and used it with my students, it was not noticeable to me at all after they completed their pages. I would be glad to send you the pages with the transparent background and you could decide for yourself which page you like. Just send me an email and I will send the pages to you. As far as the page without the magnifying glass, the activity was showing the the children that the scales are so tiny that you need a magnifying glass to see them, so that is the reason for the magnifying glass visual. Again, I will be glad to send you a blank page if you send me an email.
