Students get a chance to show off their persuasive writing skills with this letter writing prompt about Columbus's first voyage to America. Students get the task of trying to persuade Columbus to take them with him. The prompt as well as the letter template is provided in this writing lesson. (Some research may be required prior to assigning this writing activity.)

I have taught for 36 years at the 3rd, 5th, and 6th grade levels. Fifth grade is my first love. I teach all major subject areas. In addition to my regular classroom duties, I have taught in a Basic Skills summer school program for many years as well as taught workshops to co-workers in whole language and technology.
