Cam Jansen is a junior detective created by author David Adler. Equipped with a photographic memory, she stars in a series of mysteries written for the confident 2nd through 4th grade reader. These early chapter books place our heroine in believably perilous situations that hold the interest of the student.
This literature unit begins by introducing children to the concept of photographic memory. They are given a chance to see how many fruits they can recall after examining a picture of them for thirty seconds. This piece of background information makes Cam�s special gift understandable to the reader.
Chapters are grouped in clusters of two and three. Each cluster is introduced by a vocabulary activity that presents important words students will need to know. Students are asked to make predictions based on the words and pictures they see for that cluster. Following each cluster is a set of comprehension questions that require students to recall details, confirm their predictions, and draw conclusions. I have designed the worksheets so that answers must be written in complete sentence form. The final worksheets ask the reader to record their impressions of Cam and fill in a story map chronicling the story�s plot.
